The More Things Change….
It began as a kid. I’ve always admired art in all its forms - music, theater, art. Greatly influenced by my father, I got into photography when I was 12. My first “real” camera, a Canon TX. Some of my fondest memories were of my Dad teaching my brother and me how to develop B&W photos in our basement “lab” which doubled as a utility room - when my mother wasn’t doing laundry of course.
Kodak Tri-X400 film, orange safe lights, and the sweet, pungent smell of photographic chemicals….
This continued in my high school and college days where I focused on sports photography with dreams of becoming a Sports Illustrated staff photographer. While that dream didn’t come to fruition, I enjoyed photographing county high school sports (primarily football and basketball) for the local Journal newspapers. Occasionally, I would leverage my credentials to get press passes to shoot the Washington Bullets (now called the Wizards) in addition to a few weddings and private events. I never quite made it into the full-time “pro” ranks owing to family commitments and a blooming career in information technology. The camera: venerable Canon AE-1.
Some roughly 35+ years later, I’m back with a newfound passion and desire to make another run at photography in the digital age.
I purchased my first DSLR in the mid-2000s. The Canon T2i. A great little camera. It was fun, but despite my expertise with computers, I found the “digital darkroom” too time consuming and intimidating. It would be another 15 years before this final foray into the digital photography. I’ve dedicated myself to further developing my proficiency with my equipment and exploring the art of post-processing. I’m encouraged by my growth since restarting in October of 2021. Only time will determine where this journey will lead.
